School Issues
On Tuesday March 29, a relatively small, but interested, group of volunteers attended the “Meet the Match Support Specialists” Round Table held at the BBBS Offices in
East Liberty. The goal of the evening was to give volunteers the opportunity to meet their primary Match Support Specialist so that they could place a face with the voice that contacts them about their match, as well as have an opportunity to discuss issues that they may have regarding their Little or their match.

The initial topic addressed was one that is faced by many volunteers at some point in their match relationships; school issues. School issues that concern your Little can consist of an apparent lack of interest in a subject and failure to consistently turn in homework, to a more disturbing pattern of suspension from school: Click here to continue>>

X-Box Competition is a Big Success

You have to be serious “gamers” to pass up one of the most beautiful Saturdays that Pittsburgh has seen in a long time to spend three hours in darkened rooms playing video games. But on Saturday, April 16, 14 Matches did just that! Thanks to the generosity of Microsoft, Bigs and Littles were treated to their first Xbox Tournament! The Microsoft Offices, located in Pittsburgh’s North Shore, were transformed into several gaming stations, where matches were able to show their gaming abilities while playing the Xbox game – Project Gotham Racing 2, which had the Bigs and Littles racing through the streets of many exotic locales from Moscow to Stockholm . Volunteer Discussion Board
Being a “Big” can be a lot of fun and an incredibly rewarding experience. But as our article on school issues shows, it can also have its challenges. Of course your Match Support Specialist is always there if you need them, but sometimes it’s good to get a fellow Big’s point of view. Plenty of them of have been in the same type of situations and have gone on to develop a positive, lasting friendship with their Littles. That’s why the BBBS Volunteer Discussion Board is a great tool. This is an easy way to throw out those questions, ideas, and thoughts to fellow Bigs and get great feedback. The next time you’re unsure of how to help your Little with school work, or if you simply want to share a great idea with other Bigs, hop onto the BBBS Volunteer Discussion Board. If you haven’t already signed up, click here and you’ll be ready to go! If you have any problems, contact Cheryl Jones at cjones@bbbspgh.org.

The Ultimate Resource for Bigs
The foundation has been set and construction has begun on what will become the ultimate Big resource. We are in the process of developing a completely revamped website that will act as the virtual headquarters for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Not only will it be chock- full of information, but it will be the essential communication tool for volunteers. You’ll be able to post your own pics on a site gallery, discuss ideas or issues via an improved discussion board, plan activities with other Bigs
from an activity bulletin board, reserve complimentary tickets for events, and a host of other things.
So in the coming months, be on the lookout for some new and improved changes from Big Brothers Big Sisters.
