Celebrating a successful pilot year!

On Saturday, June 28th, dozens of Bigs and Littles joined numerous local entrepreneurs and startup companies to celebrate the culmination of the inaugural year of the STARTup SOMETHING initiative. The spy-themed event was conceptualized by Dream Flight Adventuresand hosted by AlphaLab Gear, an incubator program of Innovation Works

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh launched STARTup SOMETHING in July 2013 with generous support from The Sprout Fund. The initiative provides local entrepreneurs and startups with an accessible way to engage in philanthropy. The companies expose Littles to emerging technology, ideas, and career paths in STEM and arts-related fields through hands-on learning experiences. By sharing the trials and tribulations of business development, they inspire our Littles to dream BIG as the youth strive to overcome their own challenges.

Mission: STARTup SOMETHING was the perfect way to commemorate the impacts of this one-of-a-kind initiative. After a formal “briefing” by the Central Command Station, participants were prepped to “think on their feet” during a fun and engaging activity by Digital Dream Labs, a tablet-based learning game company. Tech-savvy baby products company, 4moms, challenged the Bigs and Littles to program a “robot” and build secret spy “bugs.” Meanwhile, the nonprofit startup Assemble helped matches create their very own “special agent” badges with LED lights. Other featured participants included TechShop, MeshNet, LifeShel, Steeltown Entertainment Project, and Girls of Steel Robotics Team.
