Bigs Vince Russo and Erica Jurkowski Awarded 2025 PA Bigs of the Year
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh is proud to announce that two of our mentors — Erica Jurkowski and Vince Russo — have been named the Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year for Pennsylvania.
The two were initially names Bigs of the Year for the Greater Pittsburgh area and then were awarded the Pennsylvania title. The award is given annually to the two Bigs (mentors) in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program who went above and beyond to provide quality guidance and support to their Littles.
Vince and Damion
Vince Russo and Damion’s story is one of hope and transformation. Paired during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, their bond was formed when Damion, who lacked a father figure in his life, needed someone to show him that he could dream big. Vince, with unwavering support, encouraged Damion to aim higher, challenge himself, and believe in limitless possibilities. Today, Damion is focused on achieving higher grades and pursuing a college education in computer engineering.
“It’s been a life-changing experience,” said Vince Russo, 2025 Big of the Year. “Damion has pushed me to be a better listener for everyone in my life, and his resilience has motivated me tremendously both personally and professionally. I’m incredibly proud of how far he has come.”
Vince and Damion’s journey together serves as a reminder that mentoring is a two-way street. While Vince has helped Damion shape his future, Damion’s determination has made a lasting impression on Vince.
Erica and Ryleigh
Erica Jurkowski and Ryliegh’s match is a testament to the deep connection and personal growth that mentorship fosters. Paired just over two years ago, Erica and Ryliegh share a bond that is rooted in mutual respect, admiration, and encouragement. Ryleigh, a kind, creative, and articulate teen, has flourished under Erica’s guidance, while Erica has been inspired by Ryleigh’s confidence and artistic talents.
“Ryleigh is truly a remarkable young person. She has such a pure, genuine spirit, and watching her express herself through art has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Erica Jurkowski, 2025 Big of the Year. “Spending time with Ryleigh is a gift and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to grow alongside her.”
In their time together, both Erica and Ryleigh have discovered new strengths and capabilities in themselves, enhancing their bond and helping each other pursue their dreams.
BBBSPGH is proud to celebrate these life-changing relationships and honor the dedication and selflessness that Vince, Damion, Erica, and Ryleigh have shown each other. Their stories serve as powerful reminders of how one caring adult can make all the difference in a young person’s life and how those same young people can, in turn, enrich the lives of their mentors.
“These special relationships exemplify the mission of Big Brothers Big Sister of Greater Pittsburgh to ignite the biggest and brightest possible futures for children, families, and communities,” said Marc Bloomingdale, CEO of BBBSPGH. “The matches highlight the power of mentorship, the importance of having someone who believes in you, and the incredible rewards that happen when we invest in each other.”
